Sinefiasmeni Kiriaki - Tsitsanis and Bellou Legacy Concert TICKETS

A Tribute Show Dedicated to Vasilis Tsitsanis and Sotiria Bellou

Are you a fan of rebetiko music, the urban folk genre that emerged in Greece in the early 20th century? If so, you won’t want to miss this tribute show dedicated to two of the most influential rebetiko artists of all time: Vasilis Tsitsanis and Sotiria Bellou.

Vasilis Tsitsanis (1915-1984) was a composer, singer, and bouzouki player who is widely regarded as one of the founders of modern rebetiko.

Sotiria Bellou (1921-1997) was a singer who collaborated with Tsitsanis and other rebetiko composers, and became one of the most popular and respected voices of the genre. She had a distinctive, husky, and emotional vocal delivery that conveyed the pain, joy, and passion of rebetiko lyrics. She sang about love, betrayal, poverty, and social issues, earning the admiration of both the public and the critics.

The tribute show will feature a live band of talented musicians who will perform some of the most beloved songs of Tsitsanis and Bellou, as well as other rebetiko classics. You will also have the chance to learn more about the history and culture of rebetiko, and how it influenced the Greek music scene and society. The show will take place on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 8 pm, at the Melbourne Rebetiko Club. Tickets are $28 + BF and can be purchased online or at the door. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy a night of authentic and captivating Greek music, and to pay homage to two of the greatest rebetiko legends.

Songs from Smyrne concert at Birds Basement

SHOW SOLD OUT SECOND SHOW TO BE ANNOUNCED SOON

This live concert tribute will focus on compositions that emerged after the population exchange, including the songs that gained prominence through gramophone recordings thereafter.

The concert aims to celebrate cultural diversity through its music, focusing on the composers who relocated to mainland Greece and their profound effect on the musical landscape. The music from Smyrne was significantly affected by the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s, leading to a dispersion of diverse musical traditions and their preservation and evolution in different regions.

Today, elements of Smyrneika music can still be heard in various contemporary musical compositions, traditional ensembles, and even in the works of modern artists who draw inspiration from the rich musical legacy of this historically vibrant city.

Smyrne, now known as Izmir in Turkey, holds a significant place in the history of Greek and Turkish musical traditions. It was a melting pot of cultures and ethnicities, influencing its music with a blend of Greek, Turkish, Jewish, and Armenian elements. Characterized by a distinctive sound, Smyrneika incorporates various instruments such as the oud, bouzouki, violin, kanun, and guitar, among others. It often features emotional and melancholic melodies, reflecting the experiences and sentiments of the diverse population living in Smyrne.

This event is a co-present with Con Kalamaras, Birds Basement, The Hellenic Museum Melbourne, The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria & Multicultural Arts Victoria

The Boite presents The Tsiftes Band

Tsiftes is a Rebetiko band from Melbourne featuring Con Kalamaras, Stav Thomopoulos, Alex Petropoulos, Niko Kapralos and Jenny Dixon.

Rebetiko music, often referred to as the Greek blues, originated in Greece during the 1920s and gained prominence as the musical expression of the marginalized and outlawed. Its roots can be traced back to early songs crafted within the confines of prisons, where inmates huddled in circles, strumming their crudely fashioned baglamas and singing tales of pain, heartbreak, and camaraderie. These instruments played a pivotal role in shaping the distinctive sound of Rebetiko.

The themes of suffering, emotional anguish, and solidarity were central to Rebetiko, reflecting the realities of the subculture during that period. As a testament to their commitment to preserving this unique cultural heritage, the members of Tsiftes have become renowned for their authentic interpretations and vocal harmonies. Through their performances, they breathe life into the historical narrative of Rebetiko, ensuring that the spirit of the Greek blues continues to resonate with audiences, transcending time and preserving the essence of a bygone era.

Mousik-ί Festival

Mousik-ί Festival

featuring Cats and the Canary, Heirs of Apollo, Erinaki, Artemis + Dj’s

THE AUSTRALIAN GREEK MUSIC SCENE IS EXPLODING WITH A NEW GENERATION OF BANDS

Join us for a night of electrifying local music as the inaugural Mousik-ί Festival showcasing the emerging Greek Alternative Music scene in Melbourne/Naarm.

Experience the vibrant fusion of Greek Melodies and contemporary rhythms brought to life by four sensational bands. The entire concert will be recorded and released as a sample of the Greek-Australian music scene of the contemporary Greek Australian.

Cats and the Canary is Australia's first and only Greek swing band. The band pays a unique tribute to some of Greece's most prolific composers, blending the melodies of Theodorakis, Tsitsanis, Chiotis, Hadjidakis, and occasionally the odd tsifteteli or traditional smyrniotiko with swing, jazz, and even Latin sounds.

Heirs of Apollo- The result of an unlikely combination – an explosive fusion of two musical worlds: Greek Folk Instruments with Hard Rock drums and electric guitars. Heirs of Apollo are Reimagining Greek folk music, creating a fusion of traditional tunes with rock music like you have never heard before.

Erinaki- Melbourne-based duo Erinaki consists of Stavroula Thomopoulos and Konstantinos Kalamaras. Their music fuses traditional Greek Music with a modern twist not bound by one genre.

Erinaki draws inspiration from the sounds of Greek music, mostly folk and rebetika, but with a more contemporary twist now also expanded to a seven-piece band.

Artemis will transport you to the smoky terrazzo-floored clubs of downtown Athens.

Paying homage to her home city, the Athenian siren reimagines some of the most iconic Greek love songs with a jazz twist, in her signature theatrical style. Venture back to the 60s and 70s—the golden era of Greek music, arts and fashion. Artemis will be joined by musical director Andrew Patterson.

In between the sets and after the show, local Dj’s will drop tunes and songs, ranging in different genres and periods.
